Africa Journey Looms

Chellie Kew hasn't been still for months.

Recently the Lake Oswego woman returned from a three-week, seven country photography trip.  She was working for Christian Aid and the trip helped lay groundwork for her upcoming adventure.

Kew's always on a mission.  Her upcoming mission is to photograph the children of the world who have been diagnosed with AIDS and turn the photos into big, glossy coffee-table books.

She's quit her home-practice as a holistic health care specialist.  She's racking up the credit card bills.  But she's happy.

Her latest trip was just a taste-test for the big trip in August.  In August she'll leave for at least three months, traveling to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia, all places she's been before.  She hopes to be home by Christmas to see her family.

While in Africa, she will gather the stories of children with AIDS and photos of hope and joy - not photos of big-bellied children to feel sorry for.

Kew said she wants to raise money through her books to bring health care and education to the countries suffering from AIDS.

     But there's legwork to do.

She now has scheduled an exhibition of her work in Germany, a speaking event in Canada, and a black tie function in South Africa.

She will have a booth this Saturday at the Farmers Market in Millennium Plaza Park in Lake Oswego to sell her African photos.

"(With this project) I want to see the joy and possibility of health and healing," she said.  "What we need to see is the beauty and soul of these children."
